November 20, (THEWILL) — The United Kingdom has introduced a new immigration rule offering a faster route to permanent residency for high-income foreign workers, as part of sweeping reforms announced by the Home Office.
Under the revised policy, foreign nationals who earn £125,000 or more annually will now qualify to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after just three years of residence—significantly shorter than the current five-year requirement for most skilled workers.
According to the Home Office, the measure is intended to attract top global talent and highly skilled professionals whose expertise is crucial to the UK’s economic growth, competitiveness, and innovation goals.
The Home Office clarified that migrants earning between £50,000 and £125,000 will remain on the existing five-year residency track before becoming eligible for ILR, in line with current skilled-worker settlement rules.
Officials explained that the adjustment creates a tiered residency system that rewards exceptional skills and high economic contribution, while maintaining a stable pathway for the majority of migrant workers.
The new rule is expected to take effect soon, with detailed implementation guidelines to be issued by the Home Office in due course.
