June 29, (THEWILL) – The University of Lagos has announced its readiness to host the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) in 2024, ahead of the Africa University Games.
UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, expressed the institution’s commitment to the development of sports on its campus. THEWILL recalls that Ogunsola made history when she became the first female Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG since its establishment 60 years ago.
In an interview about the Games, Ogunsola highlighted UNILAG’s sports-oriented goals, saying: “Other countries have collegiate athletes, and there are plans for us to have that here also.” She further revealed that UNILAG’s Sports Centre has met the requirements to host the FASU.
The university has invested in upgrading various facilities to international standards, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor gym, basketball courts, and cricket fields. Additionally, UNILAG aims to develop sports-related courses and establish a sports academy through partnerships with corporate organisations.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) has expressed concerns over the financial constraints faced by the nation in sending its exceptional student-athletes to the World University Games in Chengdu, China.
As THEWILL reported, Chidiebere Ezeani, the Acting General Secretary of NUGA, called for immediate assistance, stating that the lack of resources puts the participation of these athletes, who had sacrificed a lot to prepare, at risk of missing out.
