October 15, (THEWILL) — Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, alongside members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), confirming an earlier report by THEWILL Newspaper.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Alabrah, said Diri announced his resignation on Wednesday during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa.
The development comes less than 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his resignation speech, Governor Diri, joined by the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, expressed appreciation to his supporters and the people of Bayelsa for their unwavering support.
“I have resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party. And I am not going alone — I am here with the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, and all our members who have decided to move with me.
“Today, I have formally resigned my membership of the PDP for very obvious reasons. I am grateful to my friends and supporters who have stood by us. Together, we will continue to build a strong and prosperous Bayelsa State and, by extension, a stronger Nigeria,” Diri declared.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Diri and the lawmakers had yet to formally announce their new political party.
However, THEWILL had earlier reported that Diri, along with Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, had finalised plans to defect from the PDP to the APC.
In the September 28, 2025 report titled “QUAKE IN PDP: 4 More Governors to Dump Party for APC, as Jonathan Seeks Alliance with ADC in Comeback Bid…”, THEWILL revealed that the four governors were on the verge of abandoning the PDP’s umbrella for the APC’s broom, signalling a major political realignment ahead of the next general elections.
