November 17, (THEWILL) — The Agbese family of the Ikpilogwu clan in Agila District, Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, has announced the death of eminent journalist, author and community leader, Chief Dan Agbese, the Awan’Otun of Agila.
In a statement signed by Okibe Agbese on behalf of the family, Chief Agbese passed away in the early hours of Monday, November 17, 2025, at the age of 81. The family said burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
Born on May 12, 1944, in Agila, Chief Agbese rose to national prominence as one of Nigeria’s most respected journalists, admired for his incisive satire, courageous commentary and trailblazing contributions to modern Nigerian journalism.
Over a distinguished career spanning decades, he excelled as an editor, columnist, author and media administrator.
He served as Editor of The Nigeria Standard and New Nigerian newspapers, and later as General Manager of Radio Benue, Makurdi.
His influence reached its zenith when he co-founded the iconic Newswatch magazine, where he would later become Editor-in-Chief — a position he held until April 2010.
A prolific writer, Chief Agbese authored several books and remained active in national discourse until his passing, maintaining weekly columns in Daily Trust and The Guardian.
He also operated a media consultancy with fellow journalism icons Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Muhammed and Soji Akinrinade.
The late statesman is survived by his wife, Chief Rose Agbese, six children and seven grandchildren.
The family has requested prayers and support as they prepare for the final rites.
