July 18, (THEWILL) – The Australian state of Victoria has announced its withdrawal from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to significant cost escalations.
State Premier, Daniel Andrews, revealed that the initial estimated budget of Aus$2 billion for the event had surged to approximately Aus$7 billion, which he deemed unaffordable. In a press conference held in Melbourne, Andrews stated, “Frankly, $7 billion for a sporting event, we are not doing that. I will not take money out of hospitals and schools to host an event that is three times the cost estimated and budgeted for last year.”
Despite exploring alternatives such as reducing the number of regional hubs or relocating the Games to Melbourne, none of the options were deemed viable by Andrews and his team. Consequently, Victoria notified the Commonwealth Games authorities of its decision to terminate the contract. The event, which was scheduled to feature 20 sports and 26 disciplines across five regional hubs, will no longer proceed in Victoria in 2026. Instead, the state government announced a Aus$2 billion support package for regional Victoria.
The decision by Victoria to withdraw from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been met with disappointment by the Commonwealth Games Federation. In a statement, the Federation noted its dissatisfaction, highlighting the lack of prior discussions and a short notice period of only eight hours.
THEWILL recalls that Victoria had been awarded the exclusive bidding rights for the Games just 14 months ago, but the Federation criticised the state for introducing additional sports, a new regional hub, and altered venue plans without sufficient consultation. The fate of the Games now hangs in the balance, with dwindling interest from potential host countries and concerns about the event’s relevance.
