The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 90.71 points or 0.53 percent, to 16,993.09, the S&P 500 .SPX lost 6.93 points or 0.35 percent, to 1,981.05 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 25.98 points or 0.58 percent, to 4,446.13.

Amazon (AMZN.O) was the largest decliner on the S&P 500, down nearly 12 percent.
