Watkins’ Brace Give Villa Comeback Win At Chelsea

Watkins

December 27, (THEWILL) — Aston Villa substitute Ollie Watkins struck twice in the second half to overturn a one-goal deficit and deliver a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The result keeps Villa firmly in contention near the top of the English Premier League table, cutting the gap to leaders Arsenal to just three points.

Chelsea controlled the opening period and took the lead eight minutes before half-time when Reece James delivered a corner from the left.

Joao Pedro challenged goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez at the near post, and the ball deflected in off the Brazilian’s leg to give the home side an advantage they appeared likely to protect.

The match shifted decisively when manager Unai Emery introduced Watkins and two other players in the 58th minute.

Five minutes later, Watkins drew Villa level when his shot was blocked by Robert Sanchez but rebounded off the striker and crept over the line. Despite the fortunate nature of the equaliser, it changed the momentum entirely.

Watkins then produced a composed finish to claim all three points with six minutes remaining. Youri Tielemans swung in a corner from the right, and the forward met it with a precise header that found the bottom-left corner beyond Sanchez’s reach.

Chelsea had earlier seen John McGinn nearly score an own goal from a Cole Palmer cross, but could not regain their earlier authority.

Villa now sit three points behind Arsenal, whom they face on Tuesday in a fixture that could define their ambitions this season.

Chelsea, meanwhile, suffered a damaging loss of points after failing to hold on to their first-half advantage.
