October 13, (THEWILL) — Kano State Commissioner of Police, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, says the command has recorded a major reduction in crime across the state, attributing the success to its community-driven security initiative, “Operation Kukan Kura.”
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Bakori said the strategy has helped curb criminal activities such as phone snatching, armed robbery, and thuggery.
“Our community-based crime-fighting model, Operation Kukan Kura, has contributed significantly to reducing crime in the state.
“We have seen a geometric drop in all forms of criminal activity, with phone snatching and robbery becoming a thing of the past and thuggery activities (Fadan Daba) crippled,” he said.
The commissioner also announced the arrest of nine suspects linked to a series of armed robberies in different parts of the state.
He said the arrests followed a robbery incident on October 8, 2025, at about 2 a.m. in Unguwar Wambai, Dorayi Babba Quarters, Kano metropolis.
“The robbers, armed with rifles, made away with a Toyota Yaris vehicle, foreign and local currencies amounting to N3.7 million, three mobile phones, and other valuables.
“They also brutally assaulted the complainant’s wife, removing one of her teeth with a diamond, and causing her grievous injuries,” he said.
Bakori noted that police officers from the Dorayi Divisional Headquarters responded swiftly, leading to the arrest of one suspect.
Following his directive, the Command’s Special Intervention Squad (SIS) later apprehended eight more suspects in Kano and Kaduna States.
He said the suspects confessed to being part of several armed robbery operations in Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, including a recent attack at Unguwar Jakada, Dorayi Quarters.
Recovered items include one double-barrel gun (Breach No. 273720) with 18 live cartridges, one English Falcon pistol (Breach No. RFJA 170521867), and a red Toyota Corolla LE (Registration No. ADK 787 EV) used for their operations.
Bakori added that all the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.
