March 21, (THEWILL) — Danny Welbeck struck twice to hand Brighton and Hove Albion a 2-1 English Premier League victory over Liverpool on Saturday, extending the champions’ league defeats to 10 for the season.
Brighton went ahead in the 14th minute after Ibrahima Konate miscontrolled a pass from goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, gifting the hosts possession.
Welbeck capitalised immediately, rising above the defender to head past the stranded shot-stopper.
Liverpool drew level 16 minutes later through Milos Kerkez, who looped the ball over Bart Verbruggen after Lewis Dunk nodded on a long ball from Mamardashvili.
Fabian Hurzeler’s side retook the lead in the 56th minute when Yankuba Minteh’s deep cross was directed back across goal by Jack Hinshelwood for Welbeck to tap home.
Liverpool were without the injured Alisson and Mohamed Salah and suffered a further blow when a collision between Hugo Ekitike and James Milner forced an early substitution.
Minteh later went one-on-one with Mamardashvili before being denied, and Yasin Ayari saw a late effort cleared off the line.
Brighton held firm to claim all three points, with Liverpool’s blunt attack offering little by way of a meaningful response.
The result places the champions’ Champions League ambitions under mounting pressure.
