November 08, (THEWILL) — Russia has said it is closely monitoring developments in Nigeria following threats by United States President, Donald Trump, suggesting possible U.S. military action in the country.

The Kremlin’s reaction on Friday marked another major international response to Trump’s remarks, which have generated diplomatic ripples across the globe.

Earlier, China and the European Union had cautioned the United States against military action in Nigeria.

Speaking on Friday, during a weekly press briefing in Moscow while responding to a question from Anadolu Agency, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova emphasised that Russia expects Washington to act responsibly and in accordance with international law in its approach to global security issues.

“We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms”, Zakharova said.

Her statement comes amid rising international concern over Trump’s comments, which analysts warn could inflame diplomatic tensions between the United States and Nigeria.

Trump had announced on November 1 that he had directed the Pentagon to prepare options for possible military measures against terrorist groups in Nigeria. He justified the move by citing the need to protect Christian communities allegedly under attack by extremists.

Moscow’s position underscores its consistent stance against unilateral military interventions and highlights its growing engagement in African affairs. Diplomatic observers say the move reflects Russia’s interest in maintaining stability across the continent and ensuring that U.S. actions align with international protocols.
