November 10, (THEWILL) – West Ham United got their Europa League campaign back on track with a 1-0 home victory over Olympiacos. The win kept the Hammers top of Group A and on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages.
It was also sweet revenge for West Ham, who lost 2-1 to the Greek side two weeks ago in a hostile atmosphere in Athens. Thursday night’s match at the London Stadium was far less intimidating.
The only goal came in the second half when Brazilian midfielder, Lucas Paqueta, volleyed home from close range after good work from James Ward-Prowse. Paqueta pointedly celebrated in front of the away fans, getting payback for West Ham players being targeted by lasers in the earlier fixture.
West Ham had the better of the chances overall, with Said Benrahma forcing some saves and Jarrod Bowen heading wide. However, Olympiacos defended stoutly until Paqueta’s winner.
The Hammers held on despite a late scare when Mady Camara hit the post. But David Moyes’ men got the victory they needed to stay on course for the knockout rounds.
