March 15, (THEWILL) — West Ham United and Manchester City shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at London Stadium on Saturday, a result that dealt a significant blow to City’s hopes of catching Arsenal at the top of the English Premier League table.
The visitors moved ahead in the 31st minute through a fortunate effort from Bernardo Silva, whose attempted delivery looped over Mads Hermansen and into the net. The lead lasted only four minutes, however, as Donnarumma failed to read the flight of Jarrod Bowen’s corner and Konstantinos Mavropanos punished the error with a thumping header that struck the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.
City continued to apply pressure in search of a winner. Hermansen saved well from Erling Haaland’s low effort and produced an exceptional fingertip stop to divert Tijjani Reijnders’ free-kick onto the bar, while Antoine Semenyo fired wide from a promising position.
The clearest chance of the closing stages fell to Marc Guehi, who was left completely unmarked inside the box following a scramble, only to blaze over the bar with the goal open before him.
The point leaves Manchester City nine points behind Arsenal, who had beaten Everton earlier in the day, with eight fixtures remaining. West Ham’s draw lifted them to 17th in the table, moving out of the drop zone for the first time since December.
