December 27, (THEWILL) — Florian Wirtz netted his first English Premier League goal to give Liverpool a 2-1 win against bottom-placed Wolves at Anfield.
The German midfielder converted in the 42nd minute, finishing past Jose Sa just 89 seconds after Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring.
Liverpool controlled much of the opening period, with Hugo Ekitike and Alexis Mac Allister both hitting Sa’s left post before the hosts struck twice in quick succession.
Gravenberch finished from Jeremie Frimpong’s cutback, then Wirtz stayed onside to meet Ekitike’s pass and double the advantage before half-time.
Wolves fought back after the break despite their lowly position. Santiago Bueno pulled one back after Alisson pushed Tolu Arokodare’s header onto the line, setting up a tense finale.
Arokodare, who started ahead of Jorgen Strand Larsen, missed the visitors’ clearest equaliser when he headed Jackson Tchatchoua’s cross over the crossbar.
The three points moved Liverpool into fourth place, overtaking Chelsea at least temporarily. Teenage winger Mateus Mane had earlier tested Alisson for the visitors, but Wolves could not find a second goal despite late pressure.
Wolves remain in deep trouble at the foot of the table, sitting 16 points behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool’s narrow victory keeps their top-four ambitions alive in the busy festive period.
