January 07, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha received a reduced suspension following an incident with security personnel, an independent disciplinary panel confirmed. The Brazilian striker’s ban was lowered from three matches to two after he offered to replace broken glasses belonging to a staff member.
The incident occurred on December 14, at Molineux Stadium following Wolves’ 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town. According to the England Football Association’s official report, published on Tuesday, Cunha was involved in a physical altercation where he made contact with a security guard’s face, causing damage to the individual’s spectacles.
The disciplinary committee initially considered a three-match suspension appropriate for the severity of the incident. However, several mitigating circumstances influenced their final decision, including Cunha’s prompt admission of guilt and his immediate personal apology to the affected staff member.
The panel also reduced the monetary penalty imposed on the 25-year-old striker, decreasing it from £120,000 to £80,000. The decision document emphasised Cunha’s previously clean disciplinary record as a contributing factor in the reduction of both the suspension and financial penalty.
