July 22, (THEWILL) – The US women’s national team commenced their journey in the 2023 Women’s World Cup with a resounding 3-0 victory against Vietnam at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
Sophia Smith and Lindsey Horan, led the charge, netting crucial goals for the American side. Smith’s well-executed header in the 14th minute, assisted by Alex Morgan, set the tone for the match, while Horan’s powerful strike in the second half further solidified their dominance. Moments of individual brilliance aside, the team must work on their cohesion to truly embody the renowned USWNT spirit on the field.
Throughout the match, Vietnam put up a valiant defence, holding off the USWNT’s relentless attacks until Smith’s breakthrough. The American team continued to press forward, creating numerous opportunities through players like Julie Ertz and Morgan. However, Vietnam’s goalkeeper, Trần Thị Kim Thanh, was exceptional in thwarting numerous attempt on goal. Morgan had a chance to double the lead with a penalty, but couldn’t convert, though she later redeemed herself with an assist for Smith’s second goal.
Head coach, Vlatko Andonovski, acknowledged that there was room for improvement in post-match comments. The team’s performance at times appeared fragmented, with most of the glimpses of unity primarily between Morgan and Smith. Their individual talents were enough to take out a commanding 3-0 win and temporarily top Group E until the Netherlands play Portugal.
