November 25, (THEWILL) — The 2026 FIFA World Cup draw will take place on December 5 at the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C., determining the group-stage composition for all 48 competing nations. For the first time in tournament history, three countries will serve jointly as hosts, and the field has expanded by 16 teams compared to previous editions. Despite the larger participant pool, FIFA has retained four-team groups, dividing qualified nations into four pots based on world rankings and host status.
Pot 1 features the three host nations, Canada, Mexico and the United States, alongside seven European sides and two South American powers. France, England, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium represent UEFA, whilst Argentina and Brazil complete the top tier. This configuration means the hosts receive favourable seeding but also strengthens the quality of the second and third pots relative to earlier World Cups.
Croatia lead Pot 2 as the highest-ranked nation outside the top tier, joined by Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, Iran, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria and Australia. Morocco’s rise follows their semi-final run in Qatar, and the African side will compete for the Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in mid-December. Japan dominated AFC qualifying, whilst both Switzerland and Austria earned direct qualification from UEFA.
Norway top Pot 3 after a strong qualifying campaign driven by Erling Haaland’s goalscoring form, with Scotland returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1998 following a 4–2 victory over Denmark. Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Panama, Paraguay, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and South Africa complete the third tier. Panama will appear at their second World Cup, having made their debut in 2018, whilst Uzbekistan will compete for the first time.
Pot 4 includes debutants Jordan, Cabo Verde and Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to qualify, as well as Haiti, who return after a 52-year absence, Ghana and New Zealand. All six playoff qualifiers will enter Pot 4 regardless of ranking, meaning Italy and Denmark face automatic placement in the bottom tier should they advance through UEFA’s playoff system. Four UEFA slots remain open, along with two places to be decided via inter-confederation playoffs involving nations from CAF, AFC, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.
