August 16, (THEWILL) – England women’s national football team made history on Thursday, reaching their first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup final with a 3-1 victory over co-hosts, Australia, in Sydney.
The Matildas came into the semi-final eager to advance, starting star forward, Sam Kerr, despite injury concerns. However, England controlled possession in the first half, fending off Australia’s counterattacks. Ella Toone broke through just before half-time, scoring off an assist from striker, Alessia Russo, to give the Lionesses a 1-0 lead.
Australia equalised in the 63rd minute courtesy of a brilliant long-range strike from Kerr, but England retook the lead minutes later through a clinical finish from Lauren Hemp. The Matildas tried to get back into the match, bringing on key substitute, Emily van Egmond, but Russo sealed England’s win in the closing minutes.
With the victory, England advanced to face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday. The Lionesses will now have a chance to capture their first ever title after years of growth and improvement under manager Sarina Wiegman.
For Australia, the loss ended their hopes of winning a World Cup on home soil. But their run to the semis continued their strong recent form and established them as one of the world’s elite sides. They will play Sweden on Saturday for the third place, losers’ final in a chase for the bronze.
