September 27, (THEWILL) — Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal will rejoin the squad for Sunday’s match against Real Sociedad following a four-game absence due to a groin problem. The 18-year-old winger has not appeared since representing Spain against Bulgaria and Turkey earlier this month, during which he required painkillers to participate.
Head coach, Hansi Flick, criticised Spain’s handling of the teenager during the international break, revealing Yamal trained minimally with his country while managing discomfort. Flick stated the player took medication to feature in matches where Spain scored more than three goals, expressing concern about inadequate player care during the international window.
The young forward missed La Liga encounters with Valencia, Getafe and Real Oviedo, plus Barcelona’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Newcastle United. Flick confirmed Yamal would likely start on the bench against Real Sociedad but expects him to receive playing time ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash with current champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Yamal has contributed two goals and three assists across three appearances this season before his injury setback. His return provides welcome relief for Barcelona, who have suffered numerous fitness problems during the early campaign period.
The Catalan club currently faces a significant injury list, including Raphinha, Joan Garcia, Gavi, Alejandro Balde, Fermin Lopez and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Flick acknowledged the unusual number of casualties while confirming the coaching staff would analyse training methods and procedures to prevent future problems.
