A graduate of Economics from the University of Lagos, Yemi whose father is grassroots politician and a former National Vice Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Alhaji Tayo Sowunmi, started her journalism career straight out of school in ‘Punch’ Newspaper. She would later rise to become the newspaper’s first female Group Business Editor. It was, therefore, not surprising that the then Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, appointed her Senior Special Assistant on Communications and Strategy. Although the job took her away from mainstream journalism, she remained in good touch with the profession and her colleagues and even launched a book while in office.

When Aganga left office in May 2015, she returned to her base in Lagos and floated ‘The Point’ Newspaper.
