Abiodun-Lanre Ogunlowo

December 19, (THEWILL) – Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has urged security agencies to devise effective strategies to ensure the safety of lives and property during the festive season.

Abiodun made the call on Thursday while receiving the new Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Mr. Lanre Ogunlowo, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor commended security operatives for maintaining peace in the state but expressed concern over the potential for heightened criminal activities during the yuletide.

“As we approach the festive season, we know this period comes with its challenges. Those involved in nefarious activities tend to become more desperate. I urge you to develop strategies to ensure a peaceful celebration, allowing everyone to enjoy the season without fear of insecurity,” Abiodun stated.

He further urged inter-agency collaboration to sustain the state’s status as one of the most peaceful in Nigeria. He noted that Ogun’s geographical location, sharing borders with four states and an international boundary, makes security a priority.

“Our state’s strategic location attracts an influx of people for work and education, creating unique security concerns. To address this, we revitalized the State Security Trust Fund to provide modern equipment and logistics, which has significantly contributed to making Ogun one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria,” he said.

Abiodun also highlighted the issue of cultism in certain areas and tasked the new Commissioner to work with other agencies to find lasting solutions.

The governor lauded the Inspector General of Police for deploying a seasoned officer to Ogun State, describing Ogunlowo as a highly trained professional whose expertise aligns with the state’s security needs.

“Ogun State is proud to produce human capital that excels at the federal level, and the IGP is one of those. His decision to deploy a competent officer like you to Ogun further strengthens our confidence in achieving a secure environment,” he added.

In his response, Ogunlowo pledged to build on existing achievements and work tirelessly to secure the state during and beyond the festive season.

“I am here to add value and ensure the safety of lives and property. With the support of the state government, collaboration with sister agencies, and the additional Armoured Personnel Carriers provided by the IGP, we will deliver on our mandate,” Ogunlowo assured.

He emphasised the need for public cooperation, urging residents to support the police in their efforts to combat crime.

“Let’s enjoy the season responsibly, respect others’ rights, and ensure peace prevails. Criminals are warned to steer clear of Ogun State, as we are prepared to act decisively,” he said.

Ogunlowo also assured that his team would address cultism and other security issues using tactical measures, emphasizing that the police are equipped and ready for the task.
