May 30, (THEWILL) – Holger Rune of Denmark advanced to the quarter-finals of the French Open with a commanding victory over favourite Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday.
The 19-year-old world number 40 broke into the top 100 at the start of this year and won his first Grand Slam match at Roland-Garros, defeating Denis Shapovalov in the first round.
And following straight-set victories over Henri Laaksonen and Hugo Gaston, his dream French Open start continued with a 7-5 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory against Tsitsipas, last year’s finalist and number four seed.
Tsitsipas broke Rune in the fourth set when he was serving for the match at 5-2, but Rune saved three more breakpoints two games later to close out the contest.
Rune, who defeated Alexander Zverev earlier this year in Munich, now meets number eight seed Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals.
