May 3, (THEWILL)- The pan Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has issued a stern warning to Igbo elders not to apologise to Fulani leadership over the 1966 coup.
A statement by the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said the body condemns any attempt by Igbo elders to undermine the integrity and virtues of Igbo nation.
According to him, there is a need for Ndigbo to preserve their vehicles, honour her tradition and uphold her identity.
He said, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the revered apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, asserts its uncompromising stance against potential actions by misguided Igbo Elders seeking to extend apologies to the Fulani leadership concerning the historically significant 1966 Coup.
“In a resolute and unyielding declaration, Ohanaeze Ndigbo condemns any attempts by erring Igbo Elders to undermine the integrity, virtue, and pride that the Igbo community holds dear.
“The relentless assaults by unrepentant suspects of Fulani marauders during the dark period of the Fulanization agenda, from 2015 to 2023, under the administration of Former President Muhammadu Buhari, remain etched in the collective memory as a scar upon the nation’s independence since 1960.
“The Igbo nation, both at home and in the diaspora, stands alerted to a disturbing trend where a faction of misguided Igbo Elders appears poised to tread a path of shame and betrayal. Their reckless pursuit of an apology to the Fulani leadership over the 1966 Coup, orchestrated by Chukwuemeka Kaduna Nzeogwu, embodies a grave act of apostasy, perfidiousness, and deception towards the legacy of illustrious Igbo figures like Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, Dr. Michael Okpara, Chief Dennis Osadebey, Dr. Francis Akanu-Ibiam, Dr. Jaja Wachuku, Sir Nwafor Orizu, Chief Sam Mbakwe, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. These legends of Igbo history would surely lament the dishonour wrought by such insidious actions.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo unequivocally states that any public apology made on behalf of the Igbo people without due approval from Imeobi and the General Assembly of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as well as the endorsement of the 60 million global Igbo population, holds no validity or acceptance.
“The sanctity of Ohanaeze as an esteemed institution must not be compromised by clandestine manoeuvres aimed at advancing personal political ambitions. Ohanaeze Ndigbo remains vigilant and resolute against ill-conceived liaisons orchestrated for the benefit of a Southeast Governor harbouring ambitions reminiscent of Nebuchadnezzar’s hubris.
“In a final cautionary note, Ohanaeze Ndigbo warns the erring Elders to retract their steps and seek penitent reconciliation with the Igbo nation. Failure to desist from the ignominious journey of offering an apology to the Fulani leadership will result in severe consequences, including ostracism and proscription across the entirety of Igboland.
