SAN FRANCISCO, December 28, (THEWILL) –Â No fewer than four persons were killed in a suicide bomb attack on Thursday at Amarwa community of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno.
The incident when a male suicide bomber infiltrated the village and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strapped to his body.
An eye witness, Bukar Fantai, told NAN that the bomber managed to sneak into the village disguising as a grain merchant.
Fantai said that the insurgent first approached a shop keeper and offered sorghum for sale.
He said the terrorist, thereafter, went to a shade where many villagers gathered for relaxation and detonated the explosive.
“The suicide bomber detonated the IED, blew up himself, killing three other persons, while 13 others sustained injuries in the explosion,” he said.
The wounded persons were referred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment while Police EOD and patrol teams had been deployed to sanitise the scene of the attack, adding that normalcy had been restored to the area.
The Borno State Secretary of the Hunters Association, Bunu Bukar, however, told journalists in Maiduguri that the attack was perpetuated by two bombers.
“The suicide bombings in Amarwa village of Konduga, about 17 kilometres from Maiduguri township, have claimed five lives, including the two suicide bombers and about 13 other people were injured and have been taken to hospitals in Maiduguri for medical treatment,” he said.
“Amarwa village was previously attacked but it was not as devastating as this time.”
An official of the Borno State Specialist Hospital, Mahmud Bukar, later told journalists that three persons could not make it out of the 17 people injured,” Bukar said.
“We had a total of 17 injured victims brought into our hospital from Amarwa in Konduga on Thursday and unfortunately, we lost two even before they were operated upon and few minutes ago, another victim passed away in the theatre room.
“We now have three deaths, and 14 injured victims in our hospital at the moment.
“I was reliably informed by the relations of some of the victims that three people, excluding the two suicide bombers, lost their lives in the attack before the injured persons were evacuated to the hospital. So, going by their calculations, we now have six deaths and fourteen injured.”
The Head of Rescue Operations, Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Bello Dambatta, has confirmed the incident but could not place a figure on the casualties.
