July 11, (THEWILL) – Japanese football veteran, Kazuyoshi Miura, affectionately known as King Kazu, has extended his loan deal with Portugal’s second-tier club, Oliveirense, solidifying his status as the world’s oldest professional player.
The 56-year-old forward, who earned nearly 90 caps for Japan between 1990 and 2000, joined Oliveirense in January on loan from Yokohama, a promoted Japanese J1 League team. The length of the new contract has not been disclosed, as confirmed by Oliveirense via their official Twitter account. Miura, a revered figure in Japanese football, began his professional career in Brazil during the 1980s and has enjoyed a remarkable journey spanning several decades.
The majority shareholder of Yokohama, Onodera Group, also became the owners of Oliveirense in November, further cementing the connection between the two clubs. Miura’s decision to extend his loan spell demonstrates his unwavering commitment to the sport. With a remarkable career that includes playing for renowned Brazilian clubs such as Santos, Palmeiras, and Coritiba, Miura joined Yokohama in 2005 after his tenure with Vissel Kobe in the Japanese top-tier league.
Additionally, Miura’s involvement in Japan’s futsal team at the age of 45 is further proof of his versatility and enduring passion for the game.
