November 14, (THEWILL) – Dave Joerger, the assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers, will be absent from the team for the time being after revealing his cancer diagnosis.
In a statement released on Saturday, Joerger said: “I will be stepping away from the bench, effective immediately, as I was recently diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer. I will take this time to focus on my health and I look forward to rejoining the team once I’ve completed the treatment process.”
Joerger admitted to ESPN that he will be out of the squad for a few weeks to receive chemotherapy and radiation treatments for a type of “head and neck” cancer.
76ers coach Doc Rivers also released a statement about Joerger saying: “Dave is not only one of the most talented and respected coaches in the NBA, but he’s a great friend, colleague, husband and father.
“The same positivity, enthusiasm and grit that have made him a successful coach will also carry him through his fight against cancer.”
Joerger was the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies from 2013 to 2016 and the Sacramento Kings from 2016 to 2019. He joined the Sixers in November 2020.
