April 01, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday fulfilled the Federal Government’s promise of a two-bedroom bungalow each for Emmanuel Amunike, Alloysius Agu, and the late Uche Okafor in Imo State, 28 years after they won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
Two of the three players, Amunike and Agu, were given the keys to their two-bedroom residences, while Okafor died on January 6, 2011 in the United States of America.
President Buhari took the opportunity to inaugurate 68 housing units as part of the National Housing Programme (NHP) at Avu, Owerri West local government, as he fulfilled his promise to the three ex-internationals, who are Imo State natives.
During the inauguration, Buhari, who was represented by Honourable Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Minister of State for Education, said it was part of the government’s plan to address the country’s housing shortages.
The housing scheme provides an opportunity to fulfil a promise made to the brave Super Eagles, who won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994. Nwajiuba, on behalf of the president, said: “I have approved allocation to redeem the outstanding allocation to the 22 members of the Super Eagles in national housing estates located in their State of choice.”
Honourable Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, revealed that the 68 housing units consist of 28 two-bedroom bungalows, 16 three-bedroom bungalows, and 24 condominiums in his speech.
Solomon Labafilo, Director of Public Building, Federal Ministry of Works, represented Fashola at the occasion.
