January 15, (THEWILL) – The Cameroon national football team rallied in the second half to claim a 1-1 draw against Guinea in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday. Playing at Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Guinea struck first through a Mohamed Bayo goal in the 10th minute. However, the Indomitable Lions equalised in the 51st when Georges-Kévin Nkoudou set up Franck Magri.
Guinea was reduced to 10 men just before half-time when captain Francois Kamano earned a straight red card for a dangerous challenge. The loss of their stand-in skipper made it difficult for the National Elephants to hold their lead. Though Cameroon controlled play in the second half, a late chance by Karl Toko Ekambi was thwarted by Guinea keeper Ibrahim Kone to preserve the 1-1 final score.
Both teams next play this Friday. Cameroon takes on defending AFCON champions Senegal in a highly anticipated match between two of the tournament favourites. Meanwhile, Guinea meets West African neighbour Gambia. The Indomitable Lions will be hoping to build on their second-half display to earn three points.
While not the desired result, Cameroon still has reason for optimism. Their talent and pedigree suggest they will contend for the continental crown. Guinea’s solid defensive effort shows they could still advance from Group C as well if they refocus for their next test.
