March 27, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Super Eagles are determined to bounce back from their shock defeat to the Wild Dogs of Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations first leg of their double-header qualifiers.
The team will clash against Guinea-Bissau in the second leg of the tie on Monday. In that first leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria lost due to a 29th-minute goal from Mama Samba Balde, which left goalkeeper Francis Uzoho helpless.
Despite the loss, head coach Jose Peseiro called for calm and blamed the defeat on bad luck and poor officiating. He acknowledged that the team missed many opportunities to score, but was proud of his team’s performance. Ahead of Monday’s rematch, Peseiro is expected to make some changes, including replacing the injured Kevin Akpoguma with Semi Ajayi and bringing in Terem Moffi to partner with Victor Osimhen in the attack.
This will be the third time Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau have met, with the Super Eagles having won their first encounter in the 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon. Guinea-Bissau is currently top of Group A with seven points, while Nigeria is in second place with six points. Sierra Leone is in third place with five points after their victory over Sao Tome & Principe.
