BEVERLY HILLS, March 31, (THEWILL) – In the North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) region, for the third consecutive Games, Honduras and Mexico will fly their flag and represent the region at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament.
Mexico will be competing on the global stage as the indisputable kings of CONCACAF as they did in London 2012 and in Rio four years later.
The Mexicans will hope to reach the heights of their 2012 team, when Oribe Peralta, Marco Fabian, Raul Jimenez, Hector Herrera and Javier Aquino led El Tri to the gold medal at Wembley, to engineer the region’s first top-of-the-podium finish at the Football event on the biggest Games stage in the world.
Mexico, who defeated Canada 2-0 in the semi-final, are record winners in CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament history. They have so far garnered eight championships to their name, in their widely impressive history of the tournament.
On the other hand, Honduras qualified by defeating USA 2-1 in the other semi-finals to cement their status as perennial competitors at this level, as well.
Even the great Mexico is no match for the Honduran team who have been to four consecutive Men’s Olympic Football Tournaments. They were at Beijing 2008 and also at London 2012, when they finished as quarter-finalists. They represented the region at Rio 2016 and went all the way to the semi-finals. It is this record that Los Catrachos will seek to improve upon in Tokyo 2020.
