September 20, (THEWILL) – The Aisha Buhari Invitational Cup Competition continues on Monday with the ladies from Cameroon eager to bounce back after a disappointing defeat to Morocco with a view to end their participation in the maiden edition of the competition on a high against fellow powerhouse Ghana.
Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses created several chances, notably through Rose Bella and Gabrielle Onguene against the Atlas Lionesses but they failed to find the back of the net as they lacked that final clinical edge to carry the day.
Gabriel Zabo, the new manager of the Lionesses was handed a defeat on his debut match in charge of the Central Africans through Fatima Tagnaout’s effort. However, together with his assistant coach Anong Bernadette, they are upbeat that they can make amends and finish with confidence.
Bernadette, who was a Cameroon captain in her active days, said: “We’ve tried to correct some things we were unable to do the last time against Morocco. We are working every day with the local players, but we didn’t see it.
“The game against Ghana will come with a better approach than what we had against Morocco. We know the game of Ghana and how they play short passes. They are also in the rebuilding process of bringing up young ones.
“It will be a good game and a nice outing for the two teams. We are both preparing for the preliminary for the TotalEnergies Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers and I think the match will be a good test.”
The Cameroonian Auxerre goalkeeper Mimboe Carole corroborated Bernadette’s view and assured her side will make corrections against Ghana. The 22-year-old shot-stopper said: “We made some mistakes and then we have the task and right to be able to correct it during the match against Mali which was not an easy one.
“Now, we have tried to work for three to four days with the coach to be able to correct the mistakes we discovered against Morocco. We hope that we will be able to correct that against Ghana.”
The Lionesses are determined to end their poor run of form with a win against the West Africans. THEWILL recalls that they have so far lost to Zambia, in their fixture from last year, and against Chile in the playoffs to qualify for the Summer Games of Tokyo 2020.
The Cameroonian ladies have struggled to impress in front of goal, having only scored just once in three games in the year 2021. Easther Mayi Kith, the Canadian-born Cameroonian footballer who plays as a defender for French club Stade de Reims, Â admitted their below-par performance in Morocco loss but revealed they will right their wrongs against Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo’s Ghana team.
Kith made the bold claim saying: “During these few days, we had the chance to work on what we lacked during the game and we will try to improve our final third passes and be more focused during all attacks so we can score goals against Ghana.”
Apart from the intention to end their winless run for the year, Cameroon will also be aiming to get one over the Ghanaians, as they currently share a similar head-to-head record, with three wins and draw five times in their previous 11 meetings, including 1-1 draw at the African Women’s Cup of Nations in Ghana.
