April 23, (THEWILL) – Carlos Alcaraz has cemented his status as a future tennis superstar after sweeping aside Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 6-4 to claim a second straight Barcelona title.
The 19-year-old Spaniard, who is ranked second in the world, was in superb form as he secured a straight sets victory over the Greek world number five. It was Alcaraz’s third trophy of the year, having already won in Buenos Aires and Indian Wells.
With Rafael Nadal out with a hip injury and Novak Djokovic struggling with an elbow problem, Alcaraz’s chances of winning the French Open have increased significantly. Sunday’s triumph in front of his home crowd was the ninth of his career, and he has now won all four of his meetings with Tsitsipas.
Alcaraz’s victory was all the more impressive because he had to come from behind after dropping serve in the third game of the match. However, he quickly regained his composure and took control, winning five of the next six games. Alcaraz will now head to the Madrid Masters as defending champion.
