November 28, (THEWILL) – Comrade Alhassan Yahaya has been elected as the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists following a decisive victory at the just-concluded National Delegates’ Conference held in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Yahaya garnered 436 votes out of 583 accredited votes, defeating his closest rival, Comrade Dele Atumbi, who secured 97 votes. The third contender, Comrade Garba Muhammed, managed 39 votes.
Other positions were filled unopposed, with the following individuals emerging victorious:
Deputy National President, Comrade Abimbola Oyetunde, Vice President Zone B – Comrade Adeiza Momoh, Secretary Zone C – Comrade Adiuku Ezenwa, National Treasurer – Comrade Ndukwe Victor, Vice President Zone F- Comrade Dokubo Opakomaba, and Secretary Zone F – Comrade John Angese.
The election results were announced by the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, represented by the NLC Chairman in Imo State, Comrade Uche Chigemezu Nwigwe. Nwigwe affirmed that the electoral process adhered strictly to the provisions of the NUJ Constitution.
In his acceptance speech, Yahaya, who was inaugurated alongside other members of his executive team immediately after the results were declared, expressed gratitude to the delegates for entrusting him with the leadership of the Union. He pledged to fulfill his campaign promises and steer the NUJ toward greater achievements during his tenure.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the NUJ Bayelsa Council, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, congratulated Comrade Yahaya and his team on their well-deserved victory. He described their emergence as a testament to their dedication and competence.
Yemoleigha also commended the Credentials Screening Committee, delegates, and journalists nationwide for conducting a successful and peaceful conference.
He prayed for divine wisdom and guidance for the new executive as they pilot the affairs of the Union over the next three years.
