BEVERLY HILLS, February 12, (THEWILL) – Fernando Alonso, Spanish Formula One driver for the team formerly known as Renault, had to be rushed to hospital after being involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.
A statement by his F1 team, now called Alpine, said the 39-year-old was conscious but awaiting medical tests in response to a media report suggesting he suffered fractures.
The double world champion, who has been out of the F1 racing circuit for two years, was due to make his comeback this season with the Alpine team currently in the process of preparing for pre-season testing at Bahrain next month.
Alpine issued an official team statement confirming the incident on Twitter: “Alpine F1 team can confirm that Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.
“Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting medical examinations tomorrow morning.”
The Gazzetta dello Sport Italian newspaper reported earlier that the Spaniard had been hit by a car while training on his bike near Lugano and was taken to hospital for immediate medical attention.
The Alpine F1 team, formerly known as Renault and renamed after the French manufacturer’s sportscar brand at the end of the 2020 season, said there would be no further updates on Alonso’s condition yesterday.
However, Gazzetta reported that initial X-rays suggested possible fractures and questioned whether Alonso would be able to start the season with the Formula One championship due to begin in Bahrain on Sunday, March 28.
