August 19, (THEWILL) – A first half goal from Julian Alvarez was enough to give Manchester City a 1-0 home win over Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Argentine’s curling shot in the 31st minute proved the difference in a hard-fought English Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium. But, City were made to work hard for the three points against a resolute Newcastle side who travelled to Manchester full of confidence after thrashing Aston Villa 5-1 last weekend.
The hosts were not at their free-flowing best, but did just enough to claim the victory. Alvarez, who starred for Argentina at the World Cup, produced the game’s standout moment when he cut inside and found the top corner. Phil Foden was instrumental in the build-up after a bright showing in the absence of injured Kevin De Bruyne.
Newcastle fought valiantly with five players booked for robust challenges. They grew into the game late on but were unable to find an equaliser. City held firm to make it two wins from two league matches this season after starting their title defense last week. Pep Guardiola will be satisfied with a professional performance from his side. The champions nullified Newcastle’s threat while showcasing their grit to grind out a significant win.
The reigning champions will seek to keep that winning streak going when they travel to take on newcomers Sheffield United on Sunday. Newcastle, meanwhile, will welcome Liverpool to St James’ Park on the same day, hoping to get back to winning ways.
