But, City were made to work hard for the three points against a resolute Newcastle side who travelled to Manchester full of confidence after thrashing Aston Villa 5-1 last weekend.
The hosts were not at their free-flowing best, but did just enough to claim the victory. Alvarez, who starred for Argentina at the World Cup, produced the game’s standout moment when he cut inside and found the top corner. Phil Foden was instrumental in the build-up after a bright showing in the absence of injured Kevin De Bruyne.
