February 27, (THEWILL) – Ruben Amorim plans to speak with Alejandro Garnacho after the Manchester United forward left the pitch immediately following his substitution during Wednesday’s 3-2 victory against Ipswich at Old Trafford. The 20-year-old Argentine departed straight down the touchline to the dressing room instead of joining fellow substitutes on the bench.
The decision to replace Garnacho with defender Noussair Mazraoui came after Patrick Dorgu received a red card late in the first half. Manchester United supporters voiced their disapproval of the substitution with audible boos, while Garnacho later posted an image on Instagram showing himself walking through rain looking dejected after the match.
“It was cold and wet, maybe,” Amorim stated regarding Garnacho’s tunnel exit. “The thinking was we’d play more in the 5-3-1. I know that is a risk because you are taking maybe the only player who has one against one pace but I felt the team was OK in the controlling of the game, almost at halftime.” When questioned about potential similarities to Marcus Rashford, who recently joined Aston Villa on loan, Amorim responded: “You are making a connection with Rashford, right? I know, I know. What I’m saying is I’m going to talk obviously with Garnacho about that.”
Despite early difficulties when Jaden Philogene capitalised on confusion between Dorgu and goalkeeper Andre Onana to score first, Manchester United recovered through an own goal from Sam Morsy and a Matthijs de Ligt effort. Dorgu subsequently received a red card following referee Darren England’s video review of his challenge on Omari Hutchinson. Ipswich equalised before half-time as Philogene’s cross evaded Onana, but Harry Maguire’s header early in the second half proved decisive.
While preparing for his discussion with Garnacho, Amorim defended Dorgu regarding the sending off incident: “The important thing is that I really know Dorgu quite well. He doesn’t want to harm anybody and that is important for me.” The victory represents only Amorim’s fifth league win since taking charge at Manchester United.
