March 01, (THEWILL) – Russian tennis star, Andrey Rublev, was defaulted from the Dubai Tennis Championships semi-finals on Friday, following an angry outburst directed at a line judge.
The 26-year-old was competing against childhood friend, Alexander Bublik, when the incident occurred in the deciding set.
Bublik had recovered from a one-set deficit to lead 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-5 when Rublev unleashed a tirade at the official over a disputed call. After a lengthy exchange, the chair umpire made the decision to default Rublev for unsportsmanlike conduct, awarding the match to his Kazakh opponent.
The result denied Rublev the opportunity to defend his finals appearance from 2023 and forfeited all prize money and rankings points earned in Dubai. Meanwhile, Bublik will advance to face fifth seed Ugo Humbert, who takes on top seed Daniil Medvedev in the other semi-final.
Bublik expressed sympathy for his childhood friend Rublev following the match. “I highly doubt Andrey said something crazy. He’s not this kind of guy,” Bublik said. “It’s a pity it ended like this. I wish Andrey to get back on track as soon as possible.”
Earlier in the match, both players had heated exchanges with the umpire. Bublik smashed his racket and unleashed an expletive-laden tirade after being broken in the deciding set. However, Rublev’s outburst proved a violation too far for the officials. The Russian will now look to quickly move on from this episode.
