BEVERLY HILLS, September 01, (THEWILL) – Kingsley Ikeri, a businessman from Imo state, has been killed in Vryheid town in Kwazulu Natal province.
According to the Nigeria union in South Africa, Ikeri, 27, was killed on Wednesday.
Bartholomew Eziagulu, Chairman of the union in the province, told NAN that the businessman was allegedly tortured to death by police officers as they used plastic bag to cover his face in a bid to get information from him.
“In the process, they suffocated the deceased suffocated. When the police took him to the hospital, he was confirmed dead,” the Chairman of the union said.
Adetola Olubajo, Secretary General of the union, confirmed that the national secretariat had been informed about the death of Ikeri adding that the Nigerian authorities and the police in South Africa have also been notified.
Ikeri’s death happened two weeks after Uchena Eloh, a Nigerian, was also reportedly killed by policemen in the Western Cape Province of the country wile the Metropolitan police in Cape Town, in December 2016, suffocated Victor Nnadi, also a businessman from Imo, to death.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, said a total 116 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa through extra-judicial means in the last two years.
Seven in 10 of those killings were said to have been allegedly carried out by the South African police.
