October 13, (THEWILL) – Argentina continued their flawless start to World Cup qualifying with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay on early on Friday.
However, much of the pre-match build-up centred around Lionel Messi’s fitness. The 35-year-old, who had last played for Inter Miami a month ago, began on the bench with Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez starting up front for the Albicelestes.
The deadlock was broken thanks to an unlikely source in 36-year-old defender Otamendi. He volleyed home superbly from a Rodrigo De Paul corner in the third minute. De Paul nearly doubled Argentina’s lead minutes later but his shot struck the post. Nicolas Gonzalez also went close for the hosts.
Messi was introduced on 53 minutes as manager Scaloni sought to break down a stubborn Paraguay defence. However, Messi was thwarted by the woodwork twice, first seeing a corner clip the post before curling a trademark free kick against the same upright.
Despite the frustration, Argentina held on to make it three wins from three in qualifying and continue their march towards a potential defense of their title as World Cup champions. Messi’s fitness remains a slight concern, but with a wealth of talent around him, Argentina still have reason for optimism.jj
