Mikel Merino

August 22, (THEWILL) – Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign midfielder, Mikel Merino, from Real Sociedad for a fee of €33.5 million, with an additional €5 million in potential add-ons. The 28-year-old Spain international is expected to sign a four-year contract with an option for a fifth year, subject to passing a medical examination.

Merino, who has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time, was notably absent from Real Sociedad’s squad for their opening La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano. This move comes as the player enters the final year of his contract with the Spanish club, prompting Real Sociedad to consider the transfer.

The potential signing of Merino would mark Arsenal’s third acquisition of the 2024 summer transfer window. The club previously made David Raya’s loan move from Brentford permanent and brought in defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna to improve their squad.

Arsenal’s interest in Merino stems from his consistent performances in La Liga and his ability to strengthen the team’s midfield options. The transfer aligns with the club’s strategy to enhance their squad depth and compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions.

If the deal is completed, Merino will join in Arsenal’s challenge for titles in the 2024/2025 season. The club will look to integrate the Spanish midfielder into their squad quickly, with the aim of him contributing to their campaign across multiple fronts.
