August 03, (THEWILL) – Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, has bravely opened up about the emotional turmoil he faced last season, speaking candidly about the pain of his wife’s miscarriage and the assault he endured after a triumphant north London derby win against Tottenham.
It is a revelation that sheds light on the hidden struggles that players often face in their personal lives, despite their on-field achievements. In an emotional piece for The Players’ Tribune, Ramsdale wrote: “There are things that go on in our lives that the public has no idea about, and the past year has been an emotional rollercoaster for me and my family,” .
Following a clean sheet in Arsenal’s victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on January 15, the 25-year-old goalkeeper was assaulted by a Spurs fan, Joseph Watts, who leapt onto the advertising hoarding and aimed a kick at his back. Watts was later handed a four-year banning order for his actions.
Despite dealing with personal pain at the time, Ramsdale chose to play in the north London derby to distract himself. “Three days later, we were playing Spurs in the derby, and for me that was the only way to get my mind off things. Football has always been my escape. I told the manager I wanted to play,” he added.
Ramsdale’s is currently looking forward to welcoming a new baby with his wife Georgina and the England international is passionately advocating for a more inclusive and welcoming football environment, where fans of all backgrounds can attend games without fear of abuse.
