December 29, (THEWILL) – Arsenal’s hopes of returning to the top of the English Premier League were dealt a blow last night as West Ham claimed a controversial 2-0 victory at the London Stadium.
A contentious Tomas Soucek opener, allowed by VAR after a lengthy review, put the Hammers ahead before former Gunner Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home a second after the break.
The first half was dominated by Arsenal, who created several openings without finding a breakthrough. Their frustration grew on 13 minutes when Soucek turned home Jarrod Bowen’s cross despite doubts over whether the ball had gone out of play. In stoppage time, Declan Rice conceded a penalty for a foul on Emerson but David Raya saved Said Benrahma’s spot kick. Yet, the visitors had done enough to secure a vital three points. The controversial result dents Arsenal’s title hopes and will give confidence to League leaders Liverpool.
