October 30, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Alaves on Sunday, to climb above champions Barcelona into third place in La Liga.
Following Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat of Barcelona in El Clasico on Saturday, Diego Simeone’s side took full advantage by moving a point clear of Xavi Hernandez’s Barca, though they remained three points behind leaders Real and second-placed Girona.
Alvaro Morata scored one goal and assisted another as Atletico comfortably saw off 17th-placed Alaves at the Metropolitano Stadium. Morata set up Rodrigo Riquelme’s opener after 26 minutes before adding a second himself on the stroke of halftime, putting Atletico in complete control.
Ander Guevara pulled one back late on for Alaves but it proved only a consolation. The win means Atletico have now won 14 consecutive La Liga home matches, equalling the club record set in 2013.
“The record is not by chance. At home with our fans, we feel more comfortable, they make us feel stronger,” said Riquelme. “We’re on the right path, going game by game.”
