February 08, (THEWILL) – Christian Atsu is still missing following a devastating earthquake in Turkey, despite previous reports of his rescue from the rubble of a collapsed building.
Confusion and mixed reporting have left authorities uncertain of Atsu’s whereabouts since the earthquake, which has resulted in over 11,000 fatalities in Turkey and Syria. On Tuesday, the Ghanaian Football Association announced that Atsu had been rescued and taken to safety.
However, Volkan Demirel, the Director of Atsu’s club, Hatayspor, stated that the 31-year-old still needs to be located. “There is no information on his whereabouts yet, we don’t know where he is,” Demirel stated. Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, also confirmed that the footballer’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Atsu had recently joined Hatayspor in September and was caught in the earthquake only hours after scoring an injury-time winner. Ghana’s ambassador to Turkey, Francisca Ashietey-Odunton, spoke of the “confusion” surrounding Atsu’s location and confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was working to locate him.
The continued uncertainty of Atsu’s whereabouts remains a devastating time for his family, and authorities are doing everything in their power to locate the missing footballer and others caught under the rubble.
