December 29, (THEWILL) – Ikorodu City claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory against Sunshine Stars in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday. The match, which extended into substantial additional time, demonstrated both teams’ determination to achieve a positive result.
The home side took control in the 39th minute when Shola Adelani found the net, giving his team a deserved advantage following a period of sustained pressure. The lead lasted until first-half stoppage time when Chidozie Iwudu converted from Seth Mayi’s corner kick, bringing the scores level at 1-1.
The second half produced multiple opportunities for both sides, with neither team able to find a breakthrough during regular time. The match appeared destined for a draw until a significant moment occurred deep into added time, when the hosts were awarded a penalty.
A lengthy delay ensued as the visiting team contested the referee’s decision, leading to an extended period of stoppage time. After the protests subsided, Rivio Ayemwenre stepped forward in the 90+13 minute to convert the spot-kick, ensuring maximum points for the home team.
The result maintains Ikorodu City’s strong home record in their first NPFL campaign, while Sunshine Stars must regroup before their next fixture. Ikorodu City continue to impress in their inaugural season in Nigeria’s top division.
