May 02, (THEWILL) – Following a dialogue with stakeholders, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, Thomas Bach, has complimented the efforts of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games organisers.
After holding its first Board meeting last week in Brisbane, the German official travelled to Sydney to meet with the Organising Committee and talked about their “wonderful start” to preparations for the games.
The Board of the 20-member organising committee was announced in early April, which meant it missed an IOC deadline for its first Board meeting many months ago, but Bach was unconcerned.
The President said: “We are not only satisfied, we are impressed and happy and we are off to a really wonderful start. We are extremely impressed by the quality of the Board of the Organising Committee, by the diversity and the focus which is put on the athletes and the inclusivity of having two indigenous people on the Board.”
Bach was well aware that they could not afford to become complacent, and he was dedicated to developing a good working partnership with the organisers adding: “This honeymoon will not last forever, as we know by experience.
“Like every marriage it will have its ups and downs, but mutual respect and enthusiasm will make sure we overcome some unexpected obstacles.”
Bach and IOC officials will travel to Pacific nations during the next week before flying to Brisbane for more Olympic-related discussions.
The main topic of discussion during the Brisbane 2032 Board meeting was the need to hire a chief executive, which would be critical in planning the Games.
David Sandy Hollway, who served as chief executive of the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Paralympics, the last time Australia held the Games, is regarded to be the favourite for the role.
When Hollway was chosen in 1996, he was the fourth official to be appointed to the job in a three-and-a-half-year period.
