May 17, (THEWILL) – England talisman Harry Kane has left Bayern Munich to receive treatment for a back injury, heightening concerns over his availability for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.
The 30-year-old striker was forced off during Bayern’s UEFA Champions League semi-final loss to Real Madrid and sat out their final Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim.
Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel revealed Kane is consulting his personal doctor over the issue, stating: “Harry is being treated by his personal doctor and he is not here anymore. He won’t be with us (for the game against Hoffenheim). In Madrid, it was already touch and go (whether he’d play).” The injury comes just days before England manager Gareth Southgate names his preliminary Euro 2024 squad.
The Tottenham legend enjoyed a prolific individual campaign since joining Bayern last summer, netting 44 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions. However, his maiden season in Germany ended trophyless as Bayern finished second in the Bundesliga and exited both the UCL and DFB-Pokal.
With 62 goals in 89 caps, Kane is England’s record scorer and a pivotal figure as they target glory at Euro 2024. Southgate’s side begin their campaign against Serbia on June 16 after warm-up friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Iceland. England will be desperate for their captain to recover fitness before their tournament opener.
Southgate is set to announce his preliminary England squad for the Euros on Tuesday, before trimming it to a final 26-man party after the Iceland friendly on June 7. Kane’s back problem raises uncertainty over the striker’s involvement, in a potential blow to the Three Lions’ chances in Germany.
