April 15, (THEWILL) – Marius Kimutai, the winner of the 2023 Barcelona Marathon, has been banned for three years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), following a violation of anti-doping regulations. Kimutai, who also won the Rotterdam Marathon in 2017, will serve the ban starting from March 28, 2024, with all his results since February 2nd disqualified.
The doping violation was uncovered after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), accredited laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland reported adverse analytical findings in Kimutai’s blood and urine samples collected in February. The samples were found to contain the presence of erythropoietin (EPO), a prohibited substance.
In response to the findings, Kimutai admitted to the Anti-Doping Rule Violations and accepted the consequences. On April 10, the athlete signed the Admission of Anti-Doping Rule Violations and Acceptance of Consequences Form, according to the AIU’s statement.
The decision to ban Kimutai for three years is a clear signal of the AIU’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the sport. This incident serves as a stark reminder to athletes of the importance of adhering to the strict anti-doping regulations in place, as the consequences can be severe for those found in violation.
