August 27, (THEWILL) – Leon Balogun has joined Queens Park Rangers in the English Championship, reuniting with former Glasgow Rangers assistant coach Michael Beale.
The Super Eagles’ centre-back enjoyed a productive two-year tenure with the Scottish side Rangers, when he contributed to the club’s Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup victories. However, after the club declined to extend his contract, the 34-year-old left as a free agent in June.
Former Rangers assistant coach Beale, who is currently in charge at QPR, hailed the Super Eagles star for his skills. He had previously tweeted: “Leon Balogun was outstanding for RangersFC – both on the pitch but also around the changing room. He is a “personality” leader who gives his teammates so much positivity and guidance on a daily basis. Take a bow.”
Beale’s teaming up with Balogun at QPR suggests that Beale really did mean those positive remarks as the ex-Brighton player committed to a one-year deal with the West Londoners. His arrival puts some numbers and stealth at the core of the club’s defence.
However, considering he has not played since May, the 34-year-old would like to quickly regain match fitness. He might, however, have an immediate impact as QPR sorely needs to patch up their porous defence, which has allowed seven goals in five games this season.
