February 11, (THEWILL) – In a thrilling match at the Stade Ibn-Batouta, Flamengo defeated Al Ahly 4-2 in the Club World Cup third-place play-off on Saturday.
The match got off to an early start for Flamengo, with Gabriel Barbosa scoring the first goal from the penalty spot in the 11th minute. Despite this early setback, Al Ahly didn’t give up and levelled the score seven minutes before halftime, thanks to a header from Ahmed Abdelkader.
In the second half, Al Ahly took the lead when Abdelkader curled in a fine finish with his right foot. However, Flamengo was given a chance to make a comeback when Khaled Abdelfattah, received a straight red card, leaving Al Ahly to play with 10 men.
Pedro hooked a finish in the 77th minute to level the score, and Barbosa added another penalty after a handball in the area. The match was sealed in stoppage time by Pedro, who rolled past the goalkeeper after some poor defending from Al Ahly.
Flamengo’s win in the third-place play-off was a demonstration of their resilience and determination. Despite facing a tough opponent in Al Ahly, the Brazilian side managed to secure a well-deserved victory leaving the Egyptian side empty-handed.
