February 09, (THEWILL) – Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has revealed the club’s plans to offload another €70 million in wages during the summer transfer window.
This comes as a result of Barcelona’s well-documented financial struggles, which have resulted in the club falling foul of La Liga’s salary cap rules in the past. The Blaugrana were unable to make any permanent signings during the January transfer window, and face a battle to free up enough money to put their plans into action before next season.
Laporta admitted that the club’s high salary limit has resulted in La Liga setting more restrictive regulations. This has made it difficult for Barcelona to register players and has been a result of the club’s inherited limit, which was exceeded by millions. The club has made an effort to reduce the limit, but La Liga continues to change the regulations, making it challenging for Barcelona to overcome these obstacles.
It remains unclear how Barcelona will trim their salary. Selling players is an option for the club, whose squad is full of talented players being targeted by teams across Europe. Manchester United is reportedly interested in Frenkie de Jong and Ansu Fati, while players such as Eric Garcia, Jordi Alba, Franck Kessie, Ferran Torres, and Raphinha have all been linked with potential exits.
The Spotify-backed club must also make a decision on veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets and whether to extend the contract of Sergi Roberto.
